Size & Placement at a Glance

Ceiling plane Trim 7.75 Depth

Confirm ceiling opening matches can size (3″, 4″, 6″, etc.)

Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above before ordering.

Where it goes

Recessed into the ceiling for clean, low-profile general lighting. Match trim size to existing cans or plan housing size before cutting new openings.

Getting the Size Right

Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.

  • Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
  • Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
  • Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
  • Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Recessed — Frequently Asked Questions

4-inch trims suit kitchens, baths, and accent lighting with a tighter beam. 6-inch trims spread light wider for general room lighting and lower ceilings. Match trim size to the housing (IC-rated, new construction, or remodel) you already have or plan to install.

IC (Insulation Contact) housings can touch ceiling insulation without fire risk — required in insulated ceilings. Non-IC housings need 3 inches of clearance from insulation. Using the wrong type violates code and creates a fire hazard.

Yes — LED retrofit kits screw into existing medium-base sockets or clip into the housing. Match housing diameter (4 or 6 inch) and check whether your old dimmer is LED-compatible. Retrofits dramatically cut energy use vs. incandescent.

2700K–3000K for living spaces and bedrooms. 3000K–3500K for kitchens and baths. 4000K for garages and laundry rooms. Consistent temperature across all cans in one room looks best — mixed temperatures look patchy.

Lumens = brightness (600–1000 lm per kitchen can is common). Watts = power draw (LED cans often 8–15W). Ignore "60W equivalent" marketing and layout lumens based on room function. Spacing cans every 4–6 feet in kitchens is typical.

Most modern LED recessed trims are dimmable with the correct dimmer. Compatibility varies — check the manufacturer's dimmer list. Flicker usually means wrong dimmer type (need ELV or trailing edge for many LEDs).

Only wet-location-rated trims and housings in shower zones. Standard recessed lights are dry or damp only. Look for wet listing on both housing and trim — using a damp trim in a shower is a code violation.

New construction housings mount to joists before drywall goes up. Remodel housings clip into an existing ceiling hole from below — no attic access needed. Pick the type that matches your installation situation.

Recessed trim is often white, black, or brushed nickel in small visible areas — slight mismatch with pendants is common. For visible trim (not baffle insert), order the same finish code from one manufacturer when possible.

Both styles exist. All-in-one integrated LED units combine housing and trim. Traditional systems separate housing (in ceiling) and trim (visible ring). Confirm what is included — some listings sell trim only and housing separately.
