Getting the Size Right
Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.
- Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
- Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
- Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
- Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Wet-rated fixtures can be directly exposed to rain and water spray — wall lanterns in open areas, post lights, open sconces. Damp-rated fixtures suit covered porches and patios where rain does not hit directly. Match rating to exposure.
Lantern height should be roughly ¼ to ⅓ the door height. A standard 80-inch door suits 18–24 inch tall fixtures. Mount center 66 inches from the ground, 6–8 inches from the door trim. Larger doors need proportionally larger lanterns.
2700K–3000K is welcoming for entryways. 3000K–4000K improves security camera clarity and perimeter visibility. Avoid mixing temperatures on the same facade — consistent color looks intentional.
Not required but convenient — photocells turn lights on at dusk. Timers and smart switches add control. Many outdoor fixtures have built-in photocells. Ensure compatibility with LED bulbs to avoid flicker at dusk.
Many outdoor finishes are living finishes — oil-rubbed bronze darkens with UV and moisture. Coastal salt air accelerates patina. Powder-coated and marine-grade finishes hold color longer — choose coastal-rated products near ocean.
No — covered porches still need damp- or wet-rated fixtures due to humidity and occasional wind-driven rain. Indoor dry-location fixtures corrode and fail outdoors, even under cover.
Use bulbs rated for enclosed outdoor fixtures if the lantern is sealed. LED A19 or corn-cob LEDs replace incandescent with less heat. Match max wattage and base type (E26 common). 800–1500 lumens per entry lantern is typical.
Warm color (2700K–3000K) attracts fewer insects than cool white. Fully enclosed fixtures limit bulb exposure. Bug-repellent LED bulbs exist but reduce light quality — amber "bug lights" sacrifice color rendering.
If fixture and bulbs are dimmable and you use an outdoor-rated dimmer or smart switch rated for wet locations (in protected boxes). Entry dimming creates evening ambiance — confirm LED compatibility.
