Getting the Size Right
Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.
- Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
- Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
- Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
- Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Semi-Flush Mts. — Frequently Asked Questions
Semi-flush fixtures hang a few inches below the ceiling on a short stem — more decorative than flush mounts, lower profile than chandeliers. Ideal for 8–9 foot ceilings where a full pendant hangs too low but you want more style than a flat flush.
Same rule as flush mounts — add room length and width in feet for approximate diameter in inches. Semi-flush designs often have wider shades, so check total height (fixture + stem) to ensure clearance on 8-foot ceilings.
Some include a swivel canopy for moderate slopes. True flush-to-slope is rare. Check "Sloped Ceiling Adaptable" — otherwise the stem will not sit vertical and the canopy will show gaps on a vaulted ceiling.
Varies widely — 800 to 3000+ lumens. Open designs with multiple bulbs brighten more than enclosed drum shades. For primary room lighting, target 1500+ lumens or layer with lamps and recessed lights.
Only damp- or wet-rated models. Many semi-flush designs are dry-location for bedrooms and hallways. Filter by Safety Rating before installing in a bathroom or covered porch.
Check Bulbs Included. Integrated LED semi-flush fixtures have built-in light engines. Socketed models list bulb type and max wattage — purchase bulbs separately if not included.
Shade material (linen, frosted glass) adds warmth. Bulb color temperature also shifts appearance — 2700K through a cream shade reads very warm. Use 3000K bulbs for a neutral look or choose white glass shades for truer color.
If spec lists dimming compatibility and you use dimmable bulbs with an LED dimmer. Bedroom and dining semi-flush fixtures benefit from dimming — especially with drum shades that diffuse light softly.
Most under 15 lbs use standard boxes. Heavier semi-flush units (15–30 lbs) may need fan-rated boxes. Check mounting weight on the spec sheet before installation.
