Size & Placement at a Glance
Stake or in-ground housing depth varies by model
Where it goes
Path, spot, and well lights for walkways, beds, and facades. Stake depth and head height determine how the beam hits plants and hardscape.
Outdoor use — confirm the damp/wet location rating for your install.
Getting the Size Right
Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.
- Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
- Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
- Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
- Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Landscape Ltg. — Frequently Asked Questions
12V low-voltage systems use a transformer and are safer for DIY path and garden installs. 120V line-voltage fixtures need buried conduit and an electrician — used for larger uplights and commercial applications.
Add wattage of all fixtures on a run — total must be below transformer capacity (commonly 100–300W). LED path lights use 2–5W each vs. 20W halogen — you can run many more LEDs on the same transformer. Leave 10–20% headroom.
2700K–3000K mimics moonlight and looks natural on plants and stone. Cooler 4000K+ can look harsh and blue on foliage. Very warm 2200K "amber" reduces glare and insect attraction on patios.
Submersible fixtures need specific IP/wet ratings for ponds and fountains. In-ground well lights need drainage — bury below grade with lens flush to surface. Never submerge a fixture unless explicitly rated for underwater use.
Low-voltage wire is typically buried 6 inches or secured under mulch — less strict than 120V. Keep connections in waterproof splice kits above ground or in junction boxes. Follow local code for 120V burial depth (often 18+ inches).
Solid brass and copper develop natural patina outdoors. Powder-coated aluminum holds factory color longer. "Architectural Bronze" on aluminum is a paint — it does not patina like real bronze. Choose material based on desired aging.
Only if socket and voltage match the system. 12V MR16 LEDs replace 12V halogen MR16 in most fixtures. Do not mix voltage types. LED retrofits reduce transformer load — you may add more fixtures without upgrading the transformer.
Use stakes with firm ground contact — rocky soil may need longer stakes or concrete pads. Aim uplights at trunks and walls, not windows or neighbors' property. Shielded fixtures reduce glare and light trespass.
Yes — timers on the transformer, photocells, or smart Wi-Fi controllers automate on/off. Ensure total load is within controller rating. Smart controllers allow zoning and dimming on some 12V LED systems.
Most ship parcel in multiple boxes — transformer, wire, and fixtures separately. Wire ships on spools (50–100 ft common). Inspect stake integrity and lens seals before burying — shipping damage to seals causes water failure.
