Size & Placement at a Glance
How it fits
Match harp size, socket height, and shade dimensions to your lamp or fixture. Bottom opening must clear the bulb and any clip-on fitter.
Getting the Size Right
Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.
- Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
- Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
- Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
- Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Shades — Frequently Asked Questions
Measure top diameter, bottom diameter, and slant height (not vertical height for tapered shades). Match the harp size and spider fitter (standard ½ inch or European). Bring your old shade dimensions when shopping for replacements.
Spider fitters sit on a harp with a finial on top — most table lamps. Uno fitters screw onto the socket below the bulb. Clip-on shades clip directly to the bulb — for small candelabra bulbs only, not high-heat applications.
Yes — white linen diffuses warmly; parchment adds amber tone; black or dark shades direct light up and down only. Fabric thickness reduces output. Choose lighter materials for brighter reading light; dark shades for mood accent.
LEDs run cooler than incandescents, so clip-on shades are safer than with hot incandescent bulbs. Still respect max wattage ratings on the lamp and shade. Enclosed shades need bulbs rated for enclosed fixtures.
Fabric dyes, liner colors, and trim vary by manufacturer. "Cream" from one maker may be ivory or beige from another. Order swatches when available or match the liner color to your existing shade.
Floor lamp shades are typically 16–20 inches bottom diameter. Proportion to the base matters — shade height about ¼ to ⅓ of total lamp height. Oversized shades on slim poles look top-heavy.
Shades alone never include bulbs — they are accessories for existing lamps. Some complete lamp kits include shade and bulb; read the product type carefully (shade-only vs. full lamp).
Dust with a soft brush or vacuum upholstery attachment. Never submerge paper shades. Fabric shades may spot-clean gently — test an hidden area first. Stained shades usually need replacement rather than washing.
Yes — dark or double-lined shades block 50%+ of output upward and outward. Choose lighter linings for task reading. Open-top shades allow heat escape and more ambient uplight.
Shipped in rigid cartons with internal supports. Inspect for rips, dents, or bent fitter rings on delivery. Shade-only orders ship parcel — much lighter than complete lamp freight.
