How it fits
Match the base/socket and confirm overall length and diameter fit inside your fixture or shade. Compare lumens (not watts) and pick a color temperature for the room.
Bulbs & LED Guide
Is this fixture LED?
Choosing the right bulb
- Base / socket: match the base ( when listed in specs). Common bases include E26 (standard medium), E12 (candelabra), and GU10.
- Color temperature: 2700K–3000K is warm/inviting; 3500K–4000K is neutral; 5000K+ is daylight.
- Dimming: use bulbs labeled dimmable with a compatible LED dimmer to avoid flicker.
- Brightness: compare lumens, not watts — an 800-lumen LED replaces a 60W incandescent.
A note on tubes, ballasts & built-in LED
Linear shop and lay-in fixtures that use long tubular lamps (T8/T12) may rely on a ballast. Converting these to LED can require a ballast-bypass or a ballast-compatible tube. Decorative residential fixtures don’t use ballasts — their sockets accept LED bulbs directly, unless the fixture is integrated LED (no replaceable bulb).
Getting the Size Right
Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.
- Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
- Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
- Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
- Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Bulbs — Frequently Asked Questions
Watts = power consumed. Lumens = brightness (800 lm ≈ old 60W incandescent). Volts = electrical system (120V standard US residential). Compare lumens for brightness, not watts — LEDs use far fewer watts for the same light.
Kelvin describes warmth. 2700K warm white (cozy, bedrooms). 3000K soft white (kitchens, baths). 4000K cool white (offices, garages). 5000K daylight (task, retail). Match temperature within each room for uniform light.
Color Rendering Index (0–100) measures how accurately colors appear under the light. CRI 90+ is best for bathrooms, closets, and retail. CRI 80 is standard for general use. Low CRI makes skin tones and paint colors look wrong.
Only if the base matches (E26, E12, GU10, etc.), voltage is correct, and the fixture's max wattage is not exceeded. Enclosed fixtures need bulbs rated "for enclosed fixtures" — standard LEDs overheat in tight spaces.
Incompatible dimmer type — incandescent dimmers often flicker with LEDs. Use LED-compatible dimmers (ELV, trailing edge). Not all LED bulbs are dimmable — check packaging. Mixed bulb types on one dimmer circuit cause problems.
E26 is standard medium screw (most lamps). E12 is candelabra (chandeliers). GU10 is twist-lock spot. G9 and G4 are small bi-pin for pendants and sconces. Match the old bulb or read the fixture's socket label.
Smart bulbs need Wi-Fi or hub connectivity and fit standard sockets. They add length — may not fit enclosed globes. Physical wall switches must stay ON for app control unless you wire a smart switch. Check dimmer bypass requirements.
Most LEDs perform well in cold — unlike CFLs that dim when cold. Use outdoor-rated bulbs in exterior fixtures. Extreme heat in enclosed outdoor lanterns may still require enclosed-fixture-rated LEDs.
Rated life is often 15,000–25,000 hours but heat, enclosed fixtures, and power surges shorten life. Quality brands last longer than bargain imports. Keep packaging for warranty claims within the stated period.
You can, but color temperature and brightness may mismatch. Mixing dimmable and non-dimmable on one circuit causes issues. For multi-bulb fixtures, buy identical bulbs (same brand, model, temperature) for even appearance.
