For general ambient light, add the room length and width in feet, then convert to inches for a rough fixture diameter (a 10×12 ft room ≈ 22-inch fixture). Low ceilings benefit from wider, shallow fixtures; small closets and pantries can use 8–12 inch diameters.

A true flush mount sits nearly flat against the ceiling with little or no gap. A semi-flush (close-to-ceiling) drops a few inches on a short stem, allowing more light spread and often more decorative shape. Semi-flush works better when you need more lumens without a full pendant.

Most flush mounts require a flat ceiling — the canopy is fixed and won't sit flush on a slope. For sloped ceilings, look for a sloped-ceiling adapter, a semi-flush with a swivel canopy, or consider a pendant or track light instead.

Flush mounts hug the ceiling, so head clearance is rarely an issue. Check the fixture height spec — low-profile models are under 6 inches total height and work well in 7.5–8 ft ceiling basements and hallways where taller fixtures would feel cramped.

A hallway typically needs 800–1200 lumens total; a walk-in closet 600–1000 lumens. LED flush mounts often range 800–3000 lm. For long hallways, consider multiple smaller fixtures spaced every 8–10 feet rather than one oversized unit.

Photography lighting, monitor calibration, and nearby wall colors all shift how a finish reads. Brushed nickel can look warm near beige walls and cool near gray. Order from one manufacturer when matching existing hardware, and view the fixture in your space before the return window closes.

Only if it is damp- or wet-location rated. Many flush mounts are dry-location only and listed for bedrooms, hallways, and closets. For bathrooms, filter by Safety Rating and choose Damp or Wet location fixtures.

It varies by product. Integrated LED flush mounts have built-in light engines with a rated lifespan (often 30,000–50,000 hours). Socketed models list a bulb base type and max wattage — bulbs may or may not be included; check Bulbs Included on the product page.

Most flush mounts mount to a standard 4-inch round or octagonal box. Confirm the canopy diameter covers your box opening and that the box is rated for the fixture weight. Heavy fixtures (over 15 lbs) may need a fan-rated or deeper box — check the mounting weight spec.
