Where it goes

Welcome light for entries, halls, and stairwells. Size up for two-story foyers and maintain at least 7 ft of walk-under clearance.

Getting the Size Right

Dimensions matter for every lighting type. Check the full Dimensions & Size specs above against your space before ordering.

  • Hanging fixtures: for a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36″ above the table. In an entryway, keep at least 7 ft of floor clearance.
  • Chandelier diameter: a common starting point is room length (ft) + room width (ft) = fixture diameter in inches.
  • Vanity & sconces: mount sconces about eye level (60–66″) and size vanity lights to roughly 75% of the mirror width.
  • Outdoor: confirm the fixture’s wet/damp rating and that its scale suits the exterior wall or ceiling — outdoor fixtures often need to read larger.

Foyer/Hall Lanterns — Frequently Asked Questions

Add your foyer length and width in feet; the sum in inches is a starting diameter (12×14 ft foyer → ~26-inch fixture). For two-story entryways, the fixture should look proportional from both the ground floor and the upper landing — err slightly larger rather than too small.

Keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet above the floor in walk-through areas, and clear of the door swing path. In a two-story foyer, many designers hang the fixture with its bottom 60–66 inches above the floor so it fills the vertical space without obstructing traffic.

Yes. Large lanterns often weigh 20–50+ lbs. Use a fan-rated junction box securely anchored to a joist or approved brace. Never hang a heavy fixture from a standard lightweight box — the listing will note maximum mounting weight.

Some include a sloped-ceiling adapter or a hinged canopy; many do not. Check the spec sheet for "Sloped Ceiling Adaptable." If not included, you may need a manufacturer adapter or choose a pendant-style foyer fixture with a swivel canopy.

Foyer fixtures commonly use candelabra (E12) or medium (E26) bases. LED candelabra bulbs now deliver good output at 3–5W (40–60W equivalent). For bright two-story entries, look for 3000+ total lumens across all sockets. Match voltage (120V) and check max wattage per socket.

Oil Rubbed Bronze, Polished Nickel, and similar names are marketing labels, not industry standards. Tones vary by brand, batch, and even product line within a brand. For a foyer visible from multiple rooms, order all lighting from one manufacturer when possible.

Dimmable if the fixture spec says so and you use compatible bulbs and an LED-rated dimmer. Multi-tier lanterns with many candelabra bulbs benefit from dimming for evening ambiance. Integrated LED models list dimmer compatibility explicitly — not all are dimmable.

Yes — outdoor fixtures can be used indoors, though they may have heavier construction and different proportions. Indoor-only fixtures cannot be used outdoors. An outdoor-rated lantern in a foyer near a frequently opened door can handle temperature and humidity swings better.

Match finish and style family, but sconces are usually smaller in scale. A common approach is the same collection in coordinating sizes — one large foyer piece and smaller wall sconces from the same line. Keep color temperature consistent (all 2700K or all 3000K).

Heavy lanterns and multi-tier chandeliers often ship freight in multiple cartons with assembly required. Allow extra time for Estimated Ship Date on made-to-order finishes. Inspect all cartons on delivery and note any damage on the freight bill before signing.
